Ethno Design
is a cutting-edge initiative to revitalize and interconnect the cultural heritage from indigenous craftsmen to contemporary Europe. To achieve this Ethno Design will create intercultural opportunities to develop the traditional handicrafts towards broader audiences and markets. Through training sessions, Etho Design will create education exchanges between artisans, craftsmen and contemporary designers. The overall aim of the project is to bring the ethnic design to a wider audience and thus ensuring, thanks to and through their rich traditions, the groups’ economic, social and cultural sustainable development.
The chosen target groups are the Finno-Ugric ethnic minorities of Europe like from the Transylvanian Hungarians of Romania (who make up for 1.2 million people); and the Seto of Estonia with a population of 10,000.
Whilst project activities will mainly directly benefit individual craftsmen and craft-led designers within these ethnic groups, ultimately entire populations of these groups will gain from the enhanced and strengthened cultural heritage, thanks to new audiences developed and markets accessed as a result of the project. We aim to achieve this by creating training sessions with professional designers from partnering countries with the artisans of the Finno-Ugric communities. These sessions will create knowledge sharing between the participants and re-branded crafts and apparel. The products originating from Ethno Design will be presented in the design shows across Europe.
